Maurice Mentjens envisions a raw concrete interior with luxurious touches for the extension of the Labels boutique. Located in the southern Dutch city of Sittard, Labels stocks exclusive and avant-garde fashion labels. Maurice Mentjens designed the existing interior in 2008 and was commissioned again to create a concept for the extension.

Secret domain

This new 60m2 space showcases the boutique’s most exclusive collections from designers such as Celine, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Thom Browne, Comme des Garçons, Maison Margiela, Vetements, Raf Simons, Rick Owens, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Sacai, Jacquemus, Burberry, Moncler and many more. Its rather hidden location across a courtyard hints at an exclusive realm, waiting to be discovered by those in the know.

Striking contrasts

Visitors enter through glass doors from the courtyard to discover a bunker-like space where a minimal industrial ambiance beautifully offsets the refined pieces on display. The raw aesthetic of the concrete-finished walls and ceiling contrasts strikingly with mirrored, polished steel and glass details. The elongated space is defined by a full-height glass-and-mirror accessories rack which forms the centrepiece of the interior. Slim polished steel racks with low concrete platforms on the floor line the length of the bare walls, paired with two white LED strips that seemingly float below the ceiling to lead visitors through the space. A freestanding concrete counter is positioned by the glass facade facing the courtyard. The grey-painted poured floor perfectly complements the concrete finishes.

Thoughtful details

Mirrors are cleverly used to increase the sense of space and reflect daylight deep into the interior. The mirrored wall conceals three change rooms - opening the doors reveals a warm glow of pink that complements the cool concrete. The mirrored columns of the rack reflect fragments of the displayed items and interior which change depending on the viewing perspective. Meticulously crafted from ultra clear mirror and curved glass shelves, the rack is designed to be flexibly used. Special grooves on the mirrored columns support different displays that can be interchanged, from glass shelves to transparent niches for a mannequin, or they can be removed entirely to create a doorway through the rack. The result is a refined interior with a sophisticated edge that sets the scene for Labels’ exclusive, international collections.
